Sammy, Smokey need new homes

This domestic short-hair kitty has been named Smokey. He is eight to 10 weeks old and ready to start a new life as somebody's favorite feline. He's up-to-date on shots and is very playful. And, by the way, he has plenty of kitty friends at the shelter who are also looking for homes. Smokey can be rescued and adopted at Rockdale County Animal Care and Control Shelter at 1506 Rockbridge Road in Conyers. At the Rockdale shelter adoption fees for dogs are $30 and $20 for cats. Spaying or neutering is required for adoption. The shelter is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. The phone number is 770-278-8403.

Sammy is a Poodle-mix and he's had just about the worst hair day ever. He desperately needs a trip to the beauty salon, but the folks at Animal Control say he looked even worse when he first came to the shelter. Obviously he has been neglected and needs some tender loving care. He is very sweet and gentle and will make a wonderful family pet. He's only a year old and weighs about 10 pounds. His adoptive parents should plan on minimal grooming, but he'll be worth it. Under all that matted fur is a gorgeous boy that deserves a better life. He can be rescued and adopted at Newton County Animal Shelter, located at 210 Lower River Road in Covington. The shelter usually has between 20 to 30 dogs and an equal number of cats eligible for adoption. The adoption fee for a dog or puppy is $25 and $10 for a cat or kitten. Spaying/neutering is mandatory for all animals. The shelter is open from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. The phone number is 770-786-9514. Anyone who has lost a pet is urged to go to the center and bring a photo of the missing animal.

Questions to ask before adopting a pet:

-- Can I make a long-term commitment to this pet?

-- Will I be able to spend enough time with a new pet?

-- Am I prepared for the cost a new pet will bring?

-- Which pet is right for my home and my family?
