Farmer signs with Tigers

Buck Farmer

Buck Farmer

Buck Farmer was one of 19 recent draft picks to officially sign with the Detroit Tigers, the Detroit Free Press reported Friday evening.

Farmer, a Rockdale grad who just completed one of the finest careers for a pitcher in Georgia Tech history, was a fifth-round selection (156th overall) by Detroit earlier this month.

After a stellar prep career at Rockdale, the right-hander was taken in the 46th round of the 2009 draft by the Atlanta Braves. Instead of signing with the hometown Braves, Farmer chose to attend Georgia Tech.

He was very effective in his first two seasons, then as a junior was the Friday starter for the Yellow Jackets in 2012 and picked up first-team all-conference honors. He was picked by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 15th round of the 2012 draft, but chose to return to Tech for his senior season and was first-team all-Atlantic Coast Conference again in helping Tech get to within one win of the Super Regionals.

Farmer was the highest-drafted player from the Conyers area since Billy Buckner (Salem) was taken in the second round of the 2004 draft out of South Carolina.

The terms of Farmer’s first professional contract have not yet been disclosed.
