Rockdale MIS Department earns international certification

CONYERS -- Rockdale County's Management Information Services Department has become the first government IT department in Georgia to earn a prestigious certification centered on global IT management best practices.

Gaining the IT Infrastructure Library, or ITIL, certification has been a key goal of the department for more than two years. All nine department employees earned the certification while handling their daily workload.

"We are the delivery mechanism for public safety, water, finance and other important operations," said MIS Department Director James C. Howell.

"Without MIS, vital services throughout the county would suffer tremendously," he said. "MIS employees feel this significant responsibility to their co-workers and other Rockdale County constituents and are on call 24 hours a day, 365 days per year to ensure the county conducts business reliably and consistently."

ITIL is a global IT management framework that has evolved over more than 20 years based on the learning experiences of some of the world's best-in-class service providers. It has been adopted by thousands of organizations worldwide, from very small businesses to major corporations with leading technology operations including Disney, NASA and HSBC bank.

"This is a significant achievement to be the first government IT department in Georgia to earn such a meaningful certification," Rockdale Commission Chairman Richard Oden said. "My sincere congratulations go out to every member of our MIS Department. What they do for our county departments, and in turn our citizens, should be applauded."

ITIL will help MIS continue to move toward standardized processes and measurable service improvements, while better protecting the county's technical environment and IT assets.

"Full ITIL compliance requires the complete support, cooperation and collaboration of our Rockdale County leadership to be successful," Howell said. "It requires a selfless approach to identifying good business opportunities, prioritizing projects and implementing services that provide maximum benefit for the widest base of customers, whether internal or external."
