CONYERS — The successful summer on the golf course for Reilly McCullough continued last weekend.
The Conyers native tied for second in the Atlanta Junior Golf 12-Under 9-Hole Club Championship at Chateau Elan Golf Club in Braselton.
McCullough, a 13-year-old who has only been playing golf for two years, shot an 18-over 90 over the two days of the event to finish even with Nick Cunningham and just three strokes behind tournament winner Brock Hoover.
McCullough made a birdie on the fourth hole and shot even par on holes one, six and eight. It’s been an excellent summer for McCullough. He won tournaments at both Canongate at Georgia National Golf Club June 12, shooting a 9-over 44, and at Flat Creek Club July 22, shooting an 8-over 44. McCullough also picked up runner-up trophies at Honey Creek Golf Club May 29 (6-over 42), Collins Hill Golf Club June 3 (15-over 50), Durham Lakes Country Club June 5 (10-over 47), Cherokee Run Golf Club June 18 (12-over 48) and the Charlie Yates Golf Course At East Lake June 8 (5-over 35).
“This summer in (Atlanta Junior Golf Association) has been a wonderful time to watch Reilly grow and mature. He’s learned how to handle adversity and success,” said Reilly’s father, Chuck. “It has been a lot of fun to watch him thrive under the pressure and to see him want to be tested by tougher talent. (Reilly) has been playing golf since he was 11, but really started focusing on golf within the last year.”
McCullough, who will play football for Young Americans Christian School this fall, had his 13th birthday recently and after playing last fall on the Canongate Tour, he’s competing with AJGA for the first time.
