CONYERS —Rockdale Post 77 took its first step to repeating as state champions by blanking Leesburg 11-0 at Alphaertta Post 201 on Friday.
Behind the win was pitcher Casey Shubert who threw a complete game giving up two hits and a couple of walks while striking out 10 batters.
“When Casey has his curveball going he’s just to be lights out,” Rockdale head coach Demarco Hamm said.
The shutout did not come as a surprise considering that Post 77 squeezed past Leesburg in their first meeting at the AFLAC Georgia Classic Tournament in Albany.
“When we went to Albany we didn’t have all of our players because of vacations or whatever, so we were short handed,” Hamm said. “This time around we had all of our players.
Post 77 started slow put it did show signs of promise. Everything came to fruition in the fourth inning as Rockdale took a 6-0 lead.
“We started off slow which I kind of figured might happen. We hadn’t played since last Saturday,” Hamm said. “We played the full nine because we didn’t tack on all of our runs until after the innings for run-rule.”
Leesburg kept Post 77 from scoring again until late in the game as Rockdale scored three times in the eighth and once in the final inning to get the win.
Cole Murphy and Cameron Ragsdale led Rockdale offensively with three hits each. Rockdale showed a good combination of power and speed as seven of their 15 hits were for extra bases.
Ragsdale paced Post 77 in extra-base hits with two doubles. Also getting two-baggers were Jake Wright and Drew Buckhault with Evan Alderman, Murphy and Hunter Ballard hitting triples.
Rockdale will be back at Post 201 today at 10 a.m. with the second game at 7:30 p.m. if they win.
Post 77 won its meeting against Dawsonville in a 27-10 game before Dawsonville forfeited the second game.
