Local golfers compete at AJG championship

COVINGTON — Five local gofers earned enough points in the Atlanta Junior Golf 2013 Summer Series tournaments to qualify for the Championship Series at the Chateau Course at Chateau Elan Golf Course in Braselton.

Conyers’ Alexander Goldman will compete in the 9-hole Classic tournament while Brandon Cope and Reilly McCullough, both of Conyers, will play for the 9-hole Club Championship title.

Covington’s Makenna Gray and Social Circle’s Tiffany Masdon will be in the Girls 18-hole Club Championship tournament.

McCullough enters the tournament tied for third place in the points standing with 23.5 points, 1.5 points behind leader Matthew Giesler of Atlanta. McCullough played in eight tournaments where he had wins at Flat Creek Club and Canongate at Georgia National Golf Club. He also had five second place finishes with his best round coming at Charlie Yates Golf Course at East Lake where he shot a five-over par 35.

With 14.25 points, Cope is in 36th place out of 101 golfers. Out of the seven events he played in over the summer, his best finish came at Mystery Valley Golf Club, where he cane in second place.

Masdon has a chance to win the championship sitting less than five points behind Greensboro’s Madison Emily Prendergast. Out of her eight tournaments, Masdon has two first-place finishes, winning at The Oaks Course and at The Cotton Fields. She also has four second-place finishes, coming a stroke behind Prendergast in their first match at The Creek at Hard Labor.

In 13th place in the points standings with 62.25 points, Gray will have to play a round like she did at Bent Tree County Club where she won in her five starts if she hopes to catch the leaders.

Playing in the Classic, Goldman is in the middle of the pack, finishing 16th overall out of 34 golfers. Out of his eight tournaments, Goldman has third-place finishes at The Oaks Course, Charlie Yates and Georgia National.

The Club Championships will begin a two-day tournament starting today and follow with the two-day, 9-hole Classic starting Saturday.
