The Rockdale Riptides will be well-represented this weekend in Savannah. The Conyers-based swim team will have four swimmers competing in 21 events at the 14-Under Long Course State Championship at the Chatham County Aquatic Center in Savannah starting Thursday.
Delaney Willette will lead the way. Willette, 12 years old, qualified in 14 different events: 50-meter freestyle, 100-freestyle, 200-freestyle, 400-freestyle, 50-breaststroke, 100-breaststroke, 200-breaststroke, 50-backstroke, 100-backstroke, 50-butterfly, 100-butterfly, 200-meter individual medley, 400-individual Medley and the 200-backstroke where she is the top seed.
Thien-An Maynard, an 11-year-old, qualified in five events, including the 50-backstroke, 200-backstroke, 50-breaststroke, 100-breaststroke and the 200-breaststroke.
Ryan Curry (13) qualified in the 100-backstroke and Marquese Tucker (11) will swim in the 200-breaststroke.
“These kids are so dedicated to swimming,” said Riptides coach Sean Willette. “They have been in the pool five days a week without a break since last August and now their hard work has paid off. We have trained to swim fast this weekend and I am looking forward to some exciting races.”
The long course state meet will run through Sunday.
