CONYERS — Rockdale County commissioners said Tuesday morning they are ready to move forward with a decision on a rezoning request from a local day care center.
Post 1 Commissioner Oz Nesbitt and Post 2 Commissioner JaNice Van Ness said TGS Christian Ministries has had ample time to resolve violations cited by the state regulating agency, Bright From the Start. A vote on the rezoning request, which involves renewal of a special-use permit to allow a day care center as an accessory use at Philadelphia Baptist Church, has been deferred since early June in order to give day care operators time to correct 13 violations cited by the state agency.
At Tuesday morning’s work session, Marshall Walker, the county’s director of Planning and Development, told commissioners that, despite the extra time, not all of the violations had been cleared.
“We talked with Bright From the Start yesterday,” said Walker. “As far as they are concerned there are still three or four violations … most of which are minor.”
Bright From the Start gave TGS until June 26 to address the violations, Walker previously said.
Walker said he stopped by the day care Tuesday morning at about 8:20 and found the doors locked and no one there.
Walker said from the county’s standpoint, the planning department was most concerned about the center director’s lack of CPR certification and first aid training.
Nesbitt said it was time to move on.
“They’ve been contacted by the county and they have had more than enough time to get their CPR certification and it’s time for the board to move forward,” Nesbitt said.
Van Ness said she was concerned that TGS had been given “so many chances” and still isn’t in compliance with state regulations. She said failure to correct the violations is an indication of a lack of concern and she, too, was ready to move forward.
The rezoning request will be on the BOC’s agenda at next week’s meeting, set for Tuesday, July 23, 10 a.m. at the Assembly Hall.
