CONYERS — As summer is heating up, the folks with Family Promise of New Rock is offering families an opportunity for a refreshing change with Cool Off in Conyers Family Day.
The free event is set for Saturday, July 27, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will feature a day of activities at Stone Mountain Harley Davidson, 900 Dogwood Drive in Conyers.
"It's going to be a fun way for folks to beat the heat and for families to spend time enjoying Conyers," said Family Promise Director Erin White. "And, of course, it is for a good cause."
Included with be kids inflatables and even a water slide. Live music will be provided by the Discover Point Church Worship Band and Chris McDaniel, formerly of Confederate Railroad. There will be food, drinks and other vendors.
The day will begin with the Family Promise Ride for motorcycle enthusiasts. Registration begins at 9 a.m. and kick stands are up at 10:30 a.m. The fees for the ride are $20 per bike or $25 with a rider. All funds raised will go to Family Promise.
Family Promise is a homeless assistance program for families in Newton and Rockdale counties and partners with church congregations in the area. Their program consists of a 60 to 90-day program in which families are required to progress toward a goal of trying to find employment, saving money and attempting to find housing. In its first year, Family Promise served 18 families including 50 children for an average of 61 days. More than 10,000 volunteer hours were donated and other gifts, including a major surgery for a mother, the purchase of an automobile at a reduced price, a scholarship for education to enhance the chances for a job and homes rented at reduced rates.
