Back-to-school celebration set for July 28

COVINGTON — The Newton County Sheriff’s Office, in conjunction with the Salvation Army, the Washington Street Community Center, Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority (Chi Tau Omega Chapter), along with other community partners, is hosting a Back to School celebration at the Turner Lake Recreation Complex, located at 6185 Turner Lake Road, from 3 to 5 p.m. on July 28.

The organizations are asking for community participation and donations of basic school supplies such as paper, pencils, pens, crayons, markers, glue, composition books, notebooks, etc. The goal is to have enough supplies for 2,000 students and they will be dispensed on a first come, first served basis.

Supplies will be sorted according to grade lists of recommended supplies from the Newton County School System. Supplies will be made available to Newton County residents only in grades pre-K through 12th.

“We know that students who stay in school are less likely to commit crimes and feel this is a way we can help encourage students by getting the school year off to a positive start,” said NCSO Cpl. Wade Freeman, of the Deputies Who Care initiative.

Those with supplies to donate may bring them to NCSO headquarters at the Newton County Law Enforcement Center at 15151 Alcovy Road. Those who would like to make monetary donations for the effort can make checks payable to Deputies Who Care and mail them to the Newton County Sheriff’s Office at 15151 Alcovy-Jersey Road, Covington, GA 30014.
