CONYERS -- Though there was no public Fourth of July celebration in Rockdale County this year, firefighters got their own private fireworks show in the early morning hours Friday.
Firefighters with Rockdale Fire Rescue were called to the ACME Fireworks tent in Conyers Crossing Shopping Center on Ga. Hwy. 138 at about 3:30 a.m. "When units arrived, they said they did see a big fireworks show," said Sharon Webb, fire prevention officer with Rockdale Fire Rescue. Only sparklers and non-explosive fireworks are legal to sell in Georgia, so there were no projectiles involved, Webb said.
A security officer reported the fire, and when firefighters arrived, the tent was fully involved, she said. The fire was extinguished in about 15 minutes.
"Pretty much it was a total loss," she said.
The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
