Rockdale's limited English students continue to exceed objectives

CONYERS -- Rockdale County students with limited English backgrounds continue to exceed most annual academic objectives.

Officials with Rockdale County Public Schools recently reported that students met or exceeded Title III Annual Measurable Achievement Objectives. Schools and school districts with a large number of English speakers of other languages received federal Title III funds.

AMAOs are measured in three separate areas.

The first area measures the progress of English-learning students, which is gauged by proficiency tests to determine if they move to the next level. Georgia's state target was 51 percent -- results show that RCPS students progressed 71.8 percent and the state as a whole progressed 67.9 percent.

It also measures attainment of proficiency, or the percentage of English learners who can attain proficiency in the English language, thus exiting the program and no longer receiving services. The state target was 6.75 percent -- results show that RCPS has a 21.30 attainment rate, while the state has a 17.30 rate.

The third area measures the percentage of students who meet annual performance targets on state-required assessments, like certain areas of the Criterion-Referenced Competency Tests and End of Course Tests.

In reading on the CRCT, the target was 86.1 percent, and RCPS scored 95.5 percent. On the math CRCT, the target was 77 percent, while RCPS scored 84.7 percent. The target for the American literature EOCT was 59 percent, and RCPS scored 61.9 percent. The target for the math EOCT was 47.4, but RCPS fell short, scoring 20.8 percent.

Leslie DeMarco, chief academic officer in the Office of Teaching and Learning at RCPS, noted that high school math is an area where RCPS is attempting to make improvements and is expecting better results in the future.
