CONYERS -- After sitting vacant for several years, the hotel on Dogwood Drive near the Ga. Highway 138/Interstate 20 interchange is expected to be open for business in a few months.

According to Marvin Flanigan, director of Planning and Inspections for the city of Conyers, the four-story, 80-room building was recently purchased by Courtyard at Marriott.

"We just issued the permit to the company (in June) and they are now repairing damage from the building sitting vacant for so long and being boarded up," Flanigan said. "They plan to open sometime in the fall."

The unfinished hotel has had a difficult history. The original development permit was issued in 2007. In August 2008, the federal Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives was called in to assist with an investigation of three small fires that broke out in the building that appeared to have been intentionally set.

Also in 2008, the development company for the Best Western filed bankruptcy. The building has been sitting idle and boarded up since that time.
