Newton Schools cancels after-school activities

COVINGTON -- The Newton County School System has cancelled all after-school activities today due to severe storms coming into the area.

"Given the various inclement weather warnings now afoot, we are cancelling all after-school activities today," said NCSS Superintendent Gary Mathews in an email Wednesday afternoon.

The After School Academic Program in the elementary, middle and high schools will continue to operate.

"Parents of ASAP students may wish to pick up their student(s) at school or await their arrival at home at the normal time via school bus," Mathews added.

The fire chief in Adairsville in Bartow County, northwest of Atlanta, says at least one person has been killed by storms that roared across the area.

Georgia Power said 8,540 customers were without power in the wake of the storms -- with 6,800 of them in northwest Georgia -- as of 1 p.m.
