Moe's Southwest Grill, Rainbow Apparel coming to Covington

COVINGTON — Covington residents will soon be hearing the greeting, “Welcome to Moe’s!”

Moe’s Southwest Grill will open in an existing building that once housed United Bank, located between Baskin Robbins and Dairy Queen in Newton Plaza off U.S. Highway 278, according to John Brozovic, director of regional leasing for Halpern Enterprises. The 2,400-square-foot building has been vacant for about a year, and was also previously the customer service office for Snapping Shoals EMC.

Hanif Merchant and his partners own four other Moe’s stores — in Loganville, Snellville, Suwanee and Sugarloaf. Merchant said the extensive renovations required for the building mean the opening will likely be in October or November.

He said he expects to hire about 15 part-time and full-time employees.

“We think it will do very well over there,” he said. “The younger crowd, the students … everyone comes to Moe’s.”

Moe’s was founded in 2000 in Atlanta and is best known for its choice of more than 20 fresh ingredients for burritos,

tacos and other entrees.

Rainbow Apparel Company is also opening a retail shop in Newton Plaza, in the former location of Stacey’s, which has been vacant for about two years, Brozovic said.

Mitch Mansour, senior leasing representative for Rainbow, projected the store will open the week of March 25. Mansour said the store will likely hire between eight and 10 part-time and full-time employees. Mansour said the spot was chosen because of the traffic volume on U.S. Highway 278. He said hiring will likely begin about two weeks prior to the store opening, and a company representative will be on site at that time for those who want to fill out applications.

According to its website, Rainbow, along with sister brands 579 and Marianne, has more than 1,000 locations within 37 states, Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Rainbow offers clothing for juniors, plus sizes and children as well as an extensive shoe collection.
