Josie, Holly looking to be adopted at animal shelters

Josie looks a little worried that nobody is coming for her, but with her looks, who can resist? She's a 3-month-old Boston Bulldog-mix with lovely brindle coloring. With her short legs, she'll remain a compact girl as she grows and could reach up to 25 pounds in weight. She's had all shots and been wormed and is ready to get to her new home. She can be rescued and adopted at Newton County Animal Shelter, located at 210 Lower River Road in Covington. The shelter usually has between 20 to 30 dogs and an equal number of cats eligible for adoption. The adoption fee for a dog or puppy is $25 and $10 for a cat or kitten. Spaying/neutering is mandatory for all animals. The shelter is open from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. The phone number is 770-786-9514. Anyone who has lost a pet is urged to go to the center and bring a photo of the missing animal.

Holly is an "ain't nothin' but" dog -- a hound, that is. She's also got some other ancestry that would be difficult to pin down, but if you're looking for a just plain dog that will require a minimum of grooming and care, she's your girl. She's 2 months old and will make a medium-sized dog. She's up-to-date on all shots and worming and is anxious to begin her new life. She can be rescued and adopted at Rockdale County Animal Care and Control Shelter at 1506 Rockbridge Road in Conyers. At the Rockdale shelter adoption fees for dogs are $30 and $20 for cats. Spaying or neutering is required for adoption. The shelter is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. The phone number is 770-278-8403.

Questions to ask before adopting a pet:

-- Can I make a long-term commitment to this pet?

-- Will I be able to spend enough time with a new pet?

-- Am I prepared for the cost a new pet will bring?

-- Which pet is right for my home and my family?
