COVINGTON -- The Newton County Development Services reminds residents of the upcoming meeting set for Jan. 31 to discuss the future growth of the Salem Road corridor through the use of a zoning tool known as an overlay district.
Overlays can be used to help create quality development by regulating features like architectural details, sidewalks and streetscaping. In addition, overlays can be used to help ensure buildings are oriented in a more pedestrian-friendly way and help control the intensity of development.
The overlay will help shape future growth, so existing detached single-family homes are not subject to the proposed regulations. Also, existing commercial property will not be subject to the rules of the overlay unless it undergoes renovation.
Although single-family homeowners and existing businesses may not be directly affected by the overlay, all members of the Salem community are encouraged to provide input on the overlay.
The meeting will be at 7 p.m. and will be held at Gateway Community Church at 11677 Brown Bridge Road. A second meeting is set for Feb. 21 at the same time and place.
