Letter: Whose gun rights are we protecting?

Whose gun rights are we protecting?

"We were disappointed with how little this meeting (led by Vice President Joe Biden) had to do with keeping our children safe and how much it had to do with an agenda to attack the Second Amendment," the NRA wrote in a statement.

Amendment II: A well regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, the right of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed.

To which "well regulated militia" did James Holmes belong? You remember him, don't you? He shot and killed 12 people in an Aurora, Colo., theater nearly six months ago. His arraignment has been delayed until March 12 for his defense attorneys to decide whether he should plead insanity. What "well regulated militia" lists Adam Lanza on its roster? He shot and killed 20 school kids and seven adults in Newtown, Conn.

An online militia group has posted the following: "Our INTEL is revealing that a 'false flag' event (another major shooting) is in the works to help push the public response towards the 'anti-gunners.' We have heard such talk before, but what is of alarm here is the approach will be of a 'militia or patriot group' or groups will attack or fire upon a federal building or employees as a protest response to the gun grab this administration is promoting." Today I find that this idiocy has already found an outlet. James Tracy, a tenured associate professor at a Florida university, claims the Newtown school shooting was staged by the government and media who are in support of stricter gun control laws.

Some call for immediate action to thwart our government's plan to merge our nation with Canada and Mexico, while others warn of the threat that Mexicans are stealthily crossing our southern border so that they may seize Texas, Arizona, New Mexico and California and reincorporate them into the country of Mexico.

More than 10 years ago, the nut who led the Southeastern States Alliance discovered a "secret map" detailing a planned UN takeover of our nation. It had been mistakenly printed on the back of a Trix cereal box (where, presumably, a breakfasting militiaman discovered it). Small wonder that an insanity defense for members of these groups is quite common. Do you really want these groups to get their hands on assault weapons and oversized magazines?

Milt. This is extremely difficult to comprehend. Bear with me. The American "founding fathers" were some of the smartest, fearless individuals of their time. They lived under a tyrannical foreign government before the revolt. They had a damned good reason for creating the second amendment. Fear of tyrannical government. The federal supreme court recently affirmed that the language of the second amendment,
"A well regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed." is explicitly a right extended to the people, not a militia. Big difference and most liberals refuse to understand it and have a interest in disarming the population for personal and political reasons. The Aurora and Sandy Hook massacre were a fracken' tragedy. No doubt about it. What you forget is that both occurred in "gun-free" zones and the citizens were defenseless. The American founders did not want the citizens to be defenseless against a tyrannical government, foreign or domestic terrorists. They did expect the citizens to handle the weapons responsibly without malice. Some pretty strange things happened around the 1970's The federal inaugurated the "war on drugs" which made drug dealers extremely rich, they acquired a lot of guns and they use them. An "anti-gun" movement started. A lot of weapons, specifically the AK-47 became available courtesy of the communist party of the failed Soviet Union. The US manufacturers steadily produced weapons for domestic consumption. Get one thing perfectly clear. The genie is out of the bottle! These things will not disappear even with the intrusive enforcement that liberals espouse. The massacres were performed by insane individuals. No new or existing law would or could have stopped the Sandy Hook massacre. A responsible armed citizen would have stopped the massacre butt cold. I hope for serious discussion of this issue. Best regards, KC

Shall not be Infringed. What part of this do you not understand Milt. Law abiding citizens are murdered every day in this country and this state because criminals have guns and they don't. It takes to long for the law to showup to save them. YOU (government) will never stop criminals from getting guns.

I have to agree dennistay criminals will always find to have guns but the government can't stop them. Which is bad but I mean what can we do? That's the hard part.

How sad is this our judicial system will let normal plead insanity, mothers that kill their children adopt children and criminals get guns. We live in a sick and twisted world.

Hey Milt - how to you protect against an other OKC bombing - 168 peopel died, 19 were children under 6, McVeigh used fertilizer, diesel fuel & ammonia, the Rev. Jim Jones killed 909 Americans at the Jonestown massacre via cynide, Richard Speck used a knife, John Wayne Gacy killed 33 by various means over a period of time and Charles Manson- most died from stabbing - one vicitm was kick, stabbed and shot. How do you stop this - these folks were sickos & that is the real issue. The solution is no easy fix - there are 330 million people in the US and we are all different and see normal differently. My son thinks I'm not normal because I don't have a Smart phone just an old fashion flip phone.
