Local trio makes good at college level

SEATTLE, Wa. -- Even all the way out on the west coast, people are starting to know the name Deshaun Sunderhaus. The former Rockdale post player and redshirt-freshman at Seattle University has been playing a starring role for the Western Athletic Conference school.

Sunderhaus, who emerged as a standout his senior season to help lead Rockdale to the state championship game in 2011, scored a season-high 23 points and pulled down 10 rebounds in a recent loss to Utah State, and in 13 games Sunderhaus leads the Redhawks in scoring (average of 11 points), rebounding (7.7) and field goal percentage (47 percent, 60 of 127).

Seattle, 5-8 overall and currently on a three-game losing streak, hosted New Mexico State on Thursday.------FORT MYERS, Fla. -- Another former Rockdale standout from the state title game team, Bernard Thompson, continued his fine sophomore season at Florida Gulf Coast. Thompson scored 11 points, one of five players in double figures, and added seven rebounds and four assists in the Eagles' 75-73 win over North Florida in Atlantic Sun play.

The victory not only moved Gulf Coast to 11-6 overall and 3-1 against league competition, but it was a school-record ninth straight home victory.

In 17 starts, Thompson leads Gulf Coast in scoring at 14.4 points and is sixth in the nation with 2.9 steals per game.

Gulf Coast continued conference play when it traveled to Spartanburg, South Carolina for a game with USC-Upstate on Thursday.------ROCK HILL, S.C. -- Winthrop's Derrick Henry is enjoying his sophomore season as well. Despite struggling in the Eagles' recent loss to Charleston Southern (8 points on 3-of-12 shooting), the Newton graduate leads the Big South Conference school in scoring, averaging 13.1 points.In 14 games (nine starts), Henry, a 6-3 guard, is also averaging 1.4 assists, though he's been struggling shooting the ball (36 percent, 58-of-160 field goal attempts).

Winthrop, which has lost three consecutive game to slip to 6-8 overall and 0-2 in conference play, travels to Lexington, Virginia to play VMI on Saturday at 1 p.m.
