The Salem basketball teams swept a Tuesday doubleheader from Gainesville in Region 8-AAAAA play. The girls started the night with a 53-29 victory, thanks to 23 points and 10 rebounds from Ayanna Mitchell.
Salem's defense was particularly stingy, holding the visiting Red Elephants to just three points in the opening quarter and nine in the first half. Salem, which improved to 8-7 and 4-4 in the region with its fourth consecutive win, also got eight points and four assists from Nikkira Brown and seven points from Kamesha Rogers.
The boys held on for a 77-74 overtime win in the nightcap. Dedrick Turner led Salem (9-6, 6-2) with 21 points, Marques McKoy added 20 and Jamaal Garror had 17.
Salem hosts Flowery Branch on Friday with the girls game tipping off at 7 p.m.
