CONYERS -- The Rockdale County Sheriff's Office has tentatively identified the body of a man found burning in woods Sunday night and has determined that no foul play was involved in his death.
According to Investigator Michael Camp, an autopsy performed Monday, information obtained during the investigation and evidence at the scene showed that the fire and the victim's death were either accidental or self-inflicted. Camp said the tentative identity of the victim may not be confirmed for several weeks.
"I want to commend our deputies and investigators for their hard work on this case," said Sheriff Eric Levett. "I want to reassure everyone that this is not a murder and there was never a danger to the public."
Two hunters reported a fire in a wooded area off Ga. Highway 212 near Susong Road shortly after 6 p.m. Sunday. When deputies arrived they discovered a body burning in a small brush fire.
Anyone with further information about this case is encouraged to call the RCSO at 770-278-8000.
