COVINGTON -- Dr. Dennis Carpenter is not leaving his position as Newton County School System's deputy superintendent of Operations until June, but he will travel between Georgia and Missouri until then.
In December, the Hickman Mills C-1 Board of Directors in Kansas City, Mo., finalized an agreement with Carpenter to begin as the district's new superintendent effective July 1.
The Missouri school district reported last week that Carpenter will be in its school system periodically during the final half of this school year, evaluating district procedures and getting acclimated to the area. He also will be working with its current acting superintendent, who has been in place since October, during the transition period.
The district also reported that in his biography, Carpenter said he is "a visionary and strategic leader versed in the area of district operations" who is ready to take "an active role, at the executive level, in matters relative to curriculum and instruction."
School Board President Breman Anderson Jr. said Carpenter had the skills and abilities to move the district forward, out of the several candidates that applied for the superintendent vacancy, according to the district's press release.
The Kansas City district received provisional accreditation from the state in September and is seeking to regain full accreditation.
The school district serves 6,200 students, while NCSS serves about 19,000 students. Its budget for the school year is more than $79 million, compared to Newton's $145 million budget.
Carpenter has been with NCSS since February 2008, when he was hired as associate superintendent for Human Resources. He is the husband of Dr. LaQuanda Carpenter, the principal at Alcovy High School since 2009.
NCSS has not yet began to advertise for either position.

WHy split the time up between here and M.O.? Why not let him go on out there? Someone below him can step up do his job. WHat does his contract say? Part time or full time? This sounds like a recipe for 6 months worth of paying him without really putting 100% into his job. Is he getting money from Newton and Missouri at the same time? Sounds pretty slick.

They'll find out about him soon enough.

Too bad this provisional accredited district doesn't take our "visionary and strategic leader" & his wife now.

I think they are afraid to hire for either position afraid they may get another pair like those two. @ Frustrated what skills and abilities filing law suits and running their mouth?

What they must had meant was skills that lack ability.

I hope NCSS is not paying him while he is at the Kansas school system periodically during the final half of this school year "evaluating district procedures and getting acclimated to the area".

Who is paying for his travel back and forth? If he has accrued leave and takes it in order to travel, as long as that is in the leave policy NCSS has to pay him for his time. My main concern is the travel and the accomodations while he is in Kansas City. Is the NCSS footing the bill?

@momofone I would imagine that they are paying him with the in between travel why who knows? They shouldn't give him a thing let K.C pay for his travel and expenses. Lol.

@ontoday your right they will find out what he is really like. Ha. I'm sure it won't take long. I wonder how quick they can call bs because if anyone knows anything about any of those two is lying. Goodness. I have an idea that his visionary sense won't last long because his last visionary outlook turned newton into a circus. We will see.

Attitude reflects leadership. That's all that needs to be said.

That is a true statement and maybe some should take a look at that and what has been done around here and think about it. Poor kansas city. No idea what they started. You live and learn and hopefully don't get sued.

How concerning.

Regardless of who is paying him to go back and forth sometimes you have to cut your loses. This means sometimes you have to pay short term to get rid of someone long term.
