Tigers win, lose big

COVINGTON -- Alcovy's basketball teams were on the giving and receiving end of lopsided wins as the Lady Tigers crushed Lovejoy 58-19 while the Wildcats downed the Alcovy boys 70-38 in Region 2-AAAAAA action on Friday.GirlsThe Lady Tigers (7-6, 4-0) jumped on Lovejoy (1-5, 1-2) early to take a 10-0 lead before the Lady Wildcats' Crystal Williams scored their first basket with 2:09 left in the period. Baskets for the Lady Wildcats were few and far between as Alcovy took a commanding 34-7 lead heading into halftime.

"We wanted a solid defensive effort," Alcovy head coach Kidada Holtzclaw said. "We do an extensive job scouting teams we're going to play. The kids do a really good job of taking the scouting report to the game. We knew they got a lot of their points in transition so we wanted to make sure we got people back and not give up any open layups. I think that made a big difference."

Even though Alcovy's big players Ashley Williams and Meagan Tucker led the way in scoring with 20 and nine points, the win was a total team effort with players such as Kaci Palo, Lakeiyah Sorrells and Ayanna Wimbush contributing in other ways with assists, steals and blocks.

"That's what we focus on; that's what we're about. We have great players in Ashley Williams and Meagan Tucker but we also have good role players," Holtzclaw said. "All of our kids are very unselfish. They don't mind passing the ball and getting the ball to scoring areas. When one person scores, we all score. When we win, we win together; we lose, we lose together and we're tired of losing."BoysThe boys game started like it was going to be a battle until the end. But the Wildcats (5-2, 2-1) exploded in the second quarter, taking a 22-9 lead before Justin Wallace, who led all scorers with 22 points, hit a 3-pointer midway through the quarter to make it 22-12. The basket did not faze Lovejoy as it ended the half leading 31-16.

Turnovers and an almost unwillingness to take the ball to the basket, taking faraway shots along with not fighting for rebounds sealed Alcovy's fate in the second half.

Following Williams in scoring for the Tigers was Marquis Sims who made three 3-pointers to end the night with nine points.

There was a fight involving JV Girlls teams from Henry County and Alcovy . Fans ran out on the floor and got involved with the fight . The Gym had to be evacuated ,games were cancelled . There was no security at the game . Not one deputy there to protect the students and fans . .Thank God no one was seriously injured . Eastside and Newton game Saturday turned into a fisticuff out in the parking lot for two adult females . Back up had to be called for the Deputies working the game . There were seven cars with law enforcement officers ,some with dogs What is happening to our schools and county ? How could you dare have a sporting event at a school and not have law enforcement presence there Can't wait to see the action on you tube ....
