Newton Citizen Poll for Jan. 6, 2013

"Contrary to popular belief, myth and practice, it is not necessary to stop behind that wide white line when making a left turn and you have a green light. It is only necessary to stop there if there is a pedestrian in the crosswalk and once they leave the crosswalk you can proceed. Of course, you need to stop behind that line if the light is red or be prepared to stop there if the light is yellow, not speed up. Full knowledge of the driving laws is a wonderful thing and can help alleviate traffic back ups and give you an opportunity to show some courtesy to others that you share the road with. (For more information, go to www.dds.ga.gov and check out page 44 of the DDS manual). By the way, this is not new information, this is that way it has been for 54 years I have been driving in five different states, so it may be a new revelation to some folks. And if you don't believe this, ask any local police officer, deputy or GSP. They are actually nice people and very helpful. But don't ask them on their 'donut' break. If this sounds like a pet peeve of mine, you are spot on."

"'The beauty of the Second Amendment is that it will not be needed until they try to take it.' -- Thomas Jefferson"

"I'm sending the Citizen an email this week because something has to be done about the garbage on the roads all over the county. I've sent emails about the problem to the Citizen about this already, but I don't guess the commissioners will act until there is a real outcry. The days of people riding up the road with bags of trash on the hoods of their cars need to be over. The days of people going down the road with a pickup truck loaded down with garbage that is flying out of the tailgate need to end. If the commissioners would spend our county taxes the right way they could close up the garbage depots and put garbage trucks on the road. Take one section of the county at a time until there is enough garbage trucks to pick up all the garbage in the county. Stop putting in round-abouts and golf cart tunnels until you can take care of the county garbage. I'm challenging Darrell Huckaby and the other columnist to start writing about this problem until the commissioners do something about it."

"I would like some transparency on the SPLOST. I do not think given our school system's current performance, especially when we have schools managed like Alcovy High, that we need to either build new buildings or add money to a system that appears to have money management issues -- think of the 500K in stadium lights overlooked by Operations and the added expense when no one knew what they were doing opening Ombudsman and the Alcovy freshman wing opened after sitting with no lights and heat and empty for months on end and the NCCA had problem after problem -- this Operations Department at NCSS does not know how to open buildings and they need no more money to open them when enrollment is still below 20K and they kept saying it would go to 25K."

"My comment today is about the recycling center off 81 North on Stone Road. I have been going there for some years, but in the last year I have noticed metal being put behind the carport bin and a small red truck and a big black truck hauling metal out of there. I also see the same trucks on Washington Street going to the scrap metal place to sell it. I think that money should go to Newton County instead of two men and probably a person employed by the center. ... "

"I know when an actor tells us that the reverse message was the best thing since apple pie for seniors, everyone should think an actor is taught to lie in movies and TV shows. Please check it out. On the news the other night the younger wife of a person lost the house and has done the same several times. You know the Fonz is getting old and he needs money also. He needed to act to get paid from this company. Please check this out and you ask the news media about it. Don't lose your house to some people after money."

"I was calling about the bowl game situation. Why is it that Georgia has played a bowl game and had three write-ups one right after the other ... They lost the game and there's about a whole page of coverage on the sports and I have seen nothing about Tech winning their bowl. They played a super bowl game and they won. That's pathetic."

Editor's note: Georgia won the Capital One bowl game against Nebraska, 45-31.

"I have a comment about the SEC. They're supposed to be the baddest conference in the world. Nobody can compete with them. Why is it they play such a cheesy bowl schedule? Georgia case in point."

Don't blame the SEC for the "cheesy" bowl games, blame the BCS. And they are the baddest conference in the world. A string of national titles proves it. Stop hating.

Readers Note:
Dear Editors note (writer): You missed the entire meaning of that poster to which you replied. They were not asking who won what or when or who they played. Their simple question is win or lose Georgia gets press and when Tech wins & they receive zero press WHY?. Now what say you? Secondly, IMHO, the SEC conference as a whole is overrated after about 3 teams (4 now that A & M has joined), the conference is average.

Thats not what the reader said though. They clearly said "they lost the game." If their point was something different then they didn't express it very well. Tech had a below average season and won a lesser bowl. Deal with it. This paper has more UGA fan readership. Sorry.

How do you "know" what the readership level is? Please state accurate sources & facts - not just a "gut" feel based on zero facts. And I thought I heard & read UGA's head coach Richt state very clearly UGA should have been selected for a more prestigous bowl, that implies they played in a lesser bowl or at least one that was well below their Head Coach's own expectations.

It's pretty much common sense. Look around you. More people care about UGA than Tech. Just the way it is, and I am no fan if either one. Richter did say that BUT the way the BCS system is set up it would nit allow for that to happen. Everyone pretty much acknowledges the flaw in the current system. I don 't need hard concrete facts to know this stuff. It's fairly obvious.

"Georgia gets press and when tech wins & they receive zero press WHY" GEORGIA SELLS! Not that many people care about tech. Besides maybe the tech bookstore, and that may be a reach, do local stores have sections devoted to tech? No, but they have plenty of UGA merchandise that sells like crazy. The University of Georgia is the state university. UGA has more alums and fans. Sorry facts are facts. By the way, "SEC overrated". Won the last 6 NC's. Best overall non-conference record. More fans attend games. More money made. Once again facts are facts.

Here are some facts you can actually look up. Just for the record no one in our family have ever attended UGA or GT – my oldest son almost selected GT but elected to go to Cal Poly Tech. Within the University System of Georgia (USG) or public universities & colleges there are a total of 36 institutions one of which is UGA. There are a total of 20 universities and 16 colleges. Therefore, UGA is NOT THE ONLY state university and a university is made up of a variety of colleges. One certainly can expect that a specialize institution such as an engineering & research university will be smaller in size than a basically liberal arts university such as UGA. But getting back to football, those “Rambling Wrecks” of GT have earned 4 national titles during their history, the most recent in 1990 and UGA earned 2 with the last in 1980. Additionally, GT has one 16 conference championships with last coming in 2009 vs. UGA’s 14 with the last in 2005. Hey, that ain’t bad for a smaller and newer school. Plus, if you go way back in history, 1916, GT set a record that will never be broken when they beat Cumberland College 222 to zip. Don’t know where you shop but I have no problem finding stores that carry both UGA & Georgia Tech stuff many have about the same amount of shelf space allocated to both - heck even Wal-Mart, Hobby Lobby, etc. etc. carries "stuff” for both and I’ve only lived here 16 years. And there sure a lot of those “ GT/UGA house divided” bumper stickers around. Relative to football stadium seating capacity (a significant measurement of fan support and indication of fan base) Sanford Stadium ranks # 9 nationally in stadium size at 92K+change; U of M (Michigan) is the largest at 108,000 and attendance has never been below 100K since 1975; Penn State at 107K; Ohio State & U of T (Tennessee) are at 102K; Alabama at 101K); U of T (Texas) at 100K); UCLA at 94K and USC (Southern Cal.) at 93.6K. You are absolutely correct on SEC teams winning the last 6 BCS games. But an interesting & factual observation is that not one team has won back to back. The last time that was done was in the ’93 to ‘97 time period (pre BCS) when Nebraska played in 4 championship games in a 5 year period and won 3 times, including one back to back). But dynasties never last long, just ask Les Miles and that coach at South Carolina.
