COVINGTON -- A 75-year-old Carr Circle man accidentally shot himself in the early morning hours Thursday, according to Newton County Coroner Tommy Davis.
"We do believe it to be an accidental shooting. He was getting ready to go to work, getting in his car when an accidental discharge of the weapon occurred," Davis said.
The victim was James T. Smith, a longtime employee with Lester Lackey & Sons Funeral Home.
"Until the investigation is complete from the Medical Examiner's Office, we're withholding the manner of death ... everything points to it being an accidental death. We don't suspect any foul play," Davis said.
The funeral for Smith was held Tuesday at Bethlehem Baptist Church in Covington.
"He was a very good man, a good friend of mine and a very good person in the community," Davis said. "It was a tragic accident that happened, and he will be greatly missed throughout the community."
