Farmer to start for Tech against St. Johns

ATLANTA -- It'll be tough to match his opening night effort, but Buck Farmer will give it a shot today. Farmer, the former Rockdale standout and senior ace for Georgia Tech, will start today's series opener against St. Johns at 4 p.m. at Russ Chandler Stadium.

Farmer, a preseason All-America selection, was dazzling in his season debut against Akron last Friday. The right-hander struck out a career-high 14 batters, didn't issue a walk and scattered four singles over eight innings. It earned him Atlantic Coast Conference pitcher of the week and national pitcher of the week honors by the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.

"I didn't really have good command of my fastball early, but I had good command over my off-speed stuff and that helped a lot early," Farmer told ramblinwreck.com. "Our defense made a couple nice plays behind me, especially early, and that was big."

The high strikeout totals are nothing new for Farmer, who fanned 115 in 106 innings pitched as a junior. After going 8-4 with a 3.54 ERA in his first season as Tech's Friday starter, the Conyers native was selected in the 15th round of the Major League Baseball First-Year Player Draft, but chose to return to Tech for his senior season.

Tech (4-0) will continue its set with St. Johns with a Saturday game at 2 p.m. and the series finale at 1 p.m. Sunday.
