Eastside baseball opens season with victory over Rockdale

COVINGTON -- Eastside's baseball team started the Jon Ayers era with a 3-2 win over Rockdale on Monday.

Junior pitcher Peyton Pallay gave the Eagles (1-1) the defense they needed early while the offense put runs on the board.

Eastside's Hank Steele put the first run on the board with a sacrifice fly to plate Daniel Garret. The Eagles took advantage of a Rockdale (0-1) error allowing Drew Buckhault to make it a 2-0 contest.

The left-handed pitcher continued to put up a strong performance allowing only a couple of hits through five innings of work.

The Bulldogs mounted a threat in the sixth inning when Dustin Kerbow took the mound for Eastside and started strong when the leadoff hitter grounded back to the pitcher for the first out. But after a pair of walks and a hit batsmen, Rockdale loaded the bases. After Buckhault took over pitching duties and walked the first batter he faced, Buckhault induced a ground ball back to the pitcher which allowed the Eagles to get out of the inning on a 1-2-3 double play.

Eastside returned the favor by allowing Rockdale to tie the game on an error in the top of the seventh.

With one out, the Bulldogs loaded the bases hoping to get the final out on a force out. Instead, Garrett was able to drive the ball deep into the outfield allowing Chase Chancey to score the winning run on a sacrifice fly.

"I was pleased by the effort of the team to fight back after giving up the two runs," Ayers said.
