Macon - It's the middle of February, must be time for Alonzo Allen to wrestle for a state championship. Allen, a junior 106-pounder at Rockdale reached the state title match for the third consecutive season Friday at the Class AAAAAA Traditional State Tournament at Macon Coliseum.
Allen, who dominated his first two matches against Dusty Nelson of East Coweta (pin in twenty seconds) and Wheeler's Aslan Kilic (12-1 major decision), reached the title match with an 11-6 win over Collins Hill's Cody Russell in the semi finals. He'll battle Brennan Ninesling of Roswell when the championship matches in all classifications begin at 3:00 p.m.
Allen is coming off heartbreaking losses in the each of the last two Traditional tournaments. Last season, he lost a 5-4 decision to Chad Hawkins of Woodland in the 106-pound final, and as a freshman 103-pounder dropped a 4-3 decision to Union Grove's Griffin Higginbotham.
Eastside's Kevin Thompson looks primed to win his first state championship after making short work of his first three opponents in Class AAAA.
Thompson, a 145-pounder, picked up a 16-0 technical fall of Gilmer's Chaz Reimer in the semi finals to reach the title match. Before that, Thompson pinned River Ridge's Noah Smith in 1:04 in the round of 16, then pinned Carrollton's Tristan Catterson in :49 in the quarterfinals.
