GSP: Fatal crash Thursday morning in Newton County

COVINGTON — A Monticello woman was killed in a two-vehicle crash Thursday morning at the intersection of Flat Shoals and Covington Bypass roads, according to the Georgia State Patrol.

Cynthia Marie Dunlap, 45, died at the scene.

The crash occurred about 9:24 a.m. when a Mitsubishi Galant was struck by a Ford Expedition that failed to stop for a stop sign at the intersection.

Dunlap was the front seat passenger in the Mitsubishi. The woman driving the vehicle was transported to Atlanta Medical Center.

The Ford Expedition was driven by a 54-year-old man, and there were five passengers inside. All were taken to Newton Medical Center with injuries. The GSP has confirmed that the five passengers were ROTC students from Henry County.

The GSP’s Specialized Crash Reconstruction Team is conducting an investigation into the crash and charges are pending, according to GSP spokesman Tracey Watson.

In other traffic safety news, the GSP has made an arrest and charged a Mableton man in connection with the Interstate 20 crash that killed a Lithonia woman on May 2, 2011.

Edmund Daniel Rudisill IV, 48, of 1181 Angelia Drive, Mableton, was arrested on Feb. 8 and booked into the Newton County Detention Center. He faces charges of homicide by vehicle in the first degree, DUI — less safe, homicide by vehicle in the second degree and improper lane usage in connection with the fatal crash.

SCRT conducted an investigation into the crash that occurred on I-20 westbound, 0.1 miles west of the Almon Road exit.

“Rudisill was operating a Ford E150 van westbound around 7:15 p.m. when he left the roadway and struck a Toyota Corolla in the left rear corner,” said GSP spokesman Gordy Wright, adding that the Toyota was stopped in the right emergency lane.

The crash resulted in the death of Recabie Riviere, 38. No one else was involved.
