DOT to hold open house on U.S. 278 project

COVINGTON -- A Location and Design Public Information Open House is scheduled for Thursday, Feb. 21, to discuss Georgia Department of Transportation's proposed widening and bridge projects in Newton County. The meeting will be held at Peachtree Academy's gymnasium, 14101 U.S. Highway 278 in Covington. The public is invited to stop by any time between 4 and 7 p.m. No formal presentation will be given.

The proposed projects would widen Ga. Highway 12/U.S. 278 from two lanes to four lanes beginning approximately at the Covington City Limits to east of Ga. Highway 142 and replace the bridges on Ga. Highway 12/U.S. 278 over the Alcovy River and Overflow just 2.5 miles east of Covington. The proposed projects would also include the reconstruction of the intersection of Ga. 12/U.S. 278 and Ga. 142 and includes a multi-lane roundabout at this location.

Newton County residents interested in learning more about the proposed projects are encouraged to attend, view displays and express thoughts and concerns with DOT representatives. After this event, meeting handouts will be available online. To access, visit Georgia DOT's web site at www.dot.ga.gov; select Information Center; Public Information; then Public Outreach.

The meeting site is accessible to persons with disabilities. Accommodations for people with disabilities can be arranged with advance notice by calling Vonda Everett, district planning and programming engineer at 478-232-3322.

Funny, when they were trying to get TSPLOST we kept hearing they couldn't do these road projects if it failed. It failed and Gov Deal said they would have to do a good job of managing to do road work. Newton County government said they had to have the TSPLOST to do projects like widen and improvements to Crowell and Salem Road. It failed. Now Crowell Rd is on the list of road projects to be done. I guess they learned how to manage' Funny because i thought that was a function of their elected positions to start with. To manage. See citizens, when they try and MANAGE they don't have to have SPLOST funds.

dennistay53, As an old boss of mine used to say about people in government positions - "they lie a little, they cheat a little but they are sincere about it or until they get caught, then it is finger pointing time".
