Big Red, Rudy looking for new homes

This doggie with the curl on the end is said to be a hound mix, but it would be a safe bet that there's some Chow in his lineage as well. He's aptly named Big Red and is a sweetheart. He's approximately 3 years old and weighs in at about 75 pounds. He's up-to-date on shots and worming. He can be rescued and adopted at Newton County Animal Shelter, located at 210 Lower River Road in Covington. The shelter usually has between 20 to 30 dogs and an equal number of cats eligible for adoption. The adoption fee for a dog or puppy is $25 and $10 for a cat or kitten. Spaying/neutering is mandatory for all animals. The shelter is open from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. The phone number is 770-786-9514. Anyone who has lost a pet is urged to go to the center and bring a photo of the missing animal. - Staff photos by Sue Ann Kuhn-Smith

This fiestly little fella is a Jack Russell/Chihuahua mix, so he may not be big, but he's got plenty of attitude. He's 2 years old and only weighs 15 pounds. He's called Rudy and would love to move in with a family who would love and nurture him. He's up-to-date on his shots and is just waiting for somebody to come and get him. He can be rescued and adopted at Rockdale County Animal Care and Control Shelter at 1506 Rockbridge Road in Conyers. At the Rockdale shelter adoption fees for dogs are $30 and $20 for cats. Spaying or neutering is required for adoption. The shelter is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. The phone number is 770-278-8403.

Questions to ask before adopting a pet:

-- Can I make a long-term commitment to this pet?

-- Will I be able to spend enough time with a new pet?

-- Am I prepared for the cost a new pet will bring?

-- Which pet is right for my home and my family?
