Conyers Police offering gun safety class

CONYERS -- The Conyers Police Department will offer a free gun safety class for residents at 7 p.m. Feb. 28 in City Council Chambers, on the second floor of the Conyers Police Department located at 1194 Scott St.

Conyers Police Sgt. Jay Archer, who routinely conducts training and serves as quartermaster for Conyers Police officers, will be the instructor of the one-hour class. Archer will focus on gun safety, issues related to gun control, self-defense questions and other matters related to Georgia law.

"There has been a great deal of discussion and debate about gun control since the tragic shootings in Aurora, Colo., and Newtown, Conn., last year," said Chief Gene Wilson. "We want to help facilitate discussion locally by sharing with the public what it means to be a responsible gun owner."

Gun dealers in Rockdale County have reported strong demand for firearms and ammunition in the wake of the shootings and in response to increased national debate over gun control. The Rockdale County Probate Court has also reported a dramatic increase in applications for permits to carry firearms.

Seating for the class is limited to 140 and those under the age of 18 must be accompanied by an adult. For more information or to indicate you plan to attend, email Sgt. Archer at jay.archer@conyersga.gov or call 770-483-6600.
