Douglas formally announces bid for Congress

COVINGTON — Commissioner John Douglas officially announced his bid for Congress on Thursday.

Douglas, a Republican, is running for Rep. Paul Broun’s District 10 seat. Broun announced Wednesday that he will run for retiring Sen. Saxby Chambliss’ seat in 2014.

Douglas made his announcement in front of a small contingent of supporters at the Newton County Historic Courthouse, with his wife, Susan, at his side.

Douglas said these are the darkest times for America since the Civil War. “It doesn’t help to have Republicans in office if they don’t vote like Republicans,” he said.

Douglas said he is a combination of Ronald Reagan, former U.S. Sen. Jim DeMint, former Florida Rep. Allen West and Broun.

“You roll all them into one, that’s a pretty conservative ball, folks,” he said.

Douglas said he would not vote to raise the debt ceiling, saying spending by the federal government must get under control. He also called for a halt in tax increases and said he supports the FairTax as a way to get all citizens, including those that “are paid not to work” to pay their fair share.

“You can’t tax yourself into prosperity. You cannot borrow yourself into prosperity. It doesn’t work,” he said.

Douglas said he would support a constitutional amendment requiring a balanced federal budget.

He said he would work to repeal Obamacare and to protect the Second Amendment.

“If you can get rid of the Second Amendment, you can get rid of the First Amendment and the whole eight (other) amendments in the Bill of Rights,” said Douglas, who was named State Senator of the Year by GeorgiaCarry.org.

Another pillar of Douglas’ platform is energy independence, saying “No other country on this Earth refuses to use (its) resources like we do.

“We only punish ourselves so we can send billions of dollars overseas to kings and potentates who don’t like us but the president bows down to,” he said.

Douglas, a retired U.S. Army major, said he supports a strong military, but said it’s time to get out of Afghanistan. “All we’ve done there is kill young men and women,” he said, calling Afghan President Hamid Karzai “corrupt,” saying he accepts America’s money and “criticizes us almost daily.”

Douglas added that he is “100 percent pro-life,” stands with the nation of Israel and wants to put U.S. military in charge of sealing the border to control illegal immigration.

The 10th district includes 25 counties, including a portion of Newton and Henry counties and all of Walton and Morgan counties.

By Georgia law, Douglas is required to vacate his county commission seat upon qualifying for another office. Qualification for the race takes place in April 2014.

Douglas has said he intends to remain on the county commission until qualifying.

Douglas has previously served on the Newton County Board of Education, in the Georgia House of Representatives and in the Georgia Senate.

Reagan, Demit, West and Broun all rolled together. Does this make him next in line for Godness? Hey John Douglas, if you are running for the 10th district why did you make your announcement in the 4th district. That's right John, the Newton county courthouse is in Rep Johnson district

I certainly hope the voters can see through his smokescreen. He was voted out of Congress once for a reason.

John Douglas is absolutely wrong for the Congress. There are way too many of that ilk he is so proud of in the Congress now and they have to be voted out in 2014. Our representatives should be moderate conservatives and democrats who will work for the common good. Douglas and Broun are not those people.

I like Douglas platforn but his record says he want walk the talk. He will say ANYTHING to get elected. I'm for a TRUE conservative for this position. You only have to look at how he has voted in two commissioner meetings to tell he isn't a conservative.

West and Broun 2 of the biggest weirdos in Congress. Do you think Douglas believes the world is only 9,000 years old too? Just what we don't need someone who will vote no on any bill that may help the American people . Give us a break John and stay out.

Here is another reason why "genetic engineering" scares me.
