Third annual 'Walk with Angels' set for March 2

CONYERS -- You can walk in honor or in memory of a cancer patient next month, while supporting mammogram education in the community.

The Kimberley Chance Atkins Foundation is holding its third annual Walk with Angels, an eight-mile walk that honors or remembers any cancer patient.

"We are proud to be a part of making a difference right here in our home town," said Benny Atkins, husband of the late Kimberley and president of the board for the foundation.

The walk is scheduled for Saturday, March 2, rain or shine. Registration is scheduled from 7 to 8 a.m., and the walk will start at 8 a.m. in Olde Town Conyers. It is expected to finish about 11 a.m.

"All ages are welcome to walk," Atkins said.

Registration fees are $25, and each individual walker raises a minimum of $300.

"That money goes toward mammograms, education and support for breast cancer in our communities," Atkins said.

Money raised will go to Newton Medical Center and Rockdale Medical Center in the form of vouchers for those who cannot afford a mammogram.

More than $26,000 was raised in 2011, and more than $40,000 was raised in 2012.

"We're hoping to raise more this year," said Jean Yontz, a member of the foundation board.

Registration for the walk also is open online at www.walkwithangels.kimatkins.net.

Prizes will be given for the most money raised by a team, most money raised by an individual, best team costumes, most spirited team, most determined walker, youngest walker and oldest walker.

"The teams have really gotten into it," Yontz said, adding that it also is an emotional event. "Some of the names and outfits are so funny. We've gotten such a positive response from it, and the community has gotten behind it. The whole community spirit is what it's all about. It's just a lot of fun."
