Four first-place finishes gives Rockdale win at South Metro

COVINGTON — Rockdale’s wrestling team had no trouble winning the South Metro wrestling tournament at Alcovy beating second place Locust Grove by 44 points.

Rockdale won the tournament with 240.50 points with Locust Grove (196.50) coming in second and Whitewater (189) finishing third.

Alcovy came in fifth place overall out of 27 teams with 149.50 points followed by Eastside, who had 118 points, in eighth place and Newton (77.50) in 13th place.

The Bulldogs had the most first-place finishes with four and the most medalist with nine wrestlers coming in the top six spots. They also had two second-place finishes and one in fourth, fifth and sixth place.

Winning their weight class for Rockdale were Alonzo Allen (113), Stephen Hart (120), Clifton Casurra (138) and Mike Mason (285).

For their efforts, Allen was voted the most outstanding wrestler with Casurra getting the fastest pin at 28 seconds and while Hart’s and Eastside’s Levi Leach championship match was voted the best finals match of the tournament.

Finishing in the runner-up position for the Bulldogs were Tyrone Hearn at 132 and Luis Galindo at 182. Coming in fourth place for Rockdale was Sean Mer with Dakota Lewis (145) coming in fifth and Lenny Mejias (125) coming in sixth.

Getting the two first place finishes for Alcovy were Parfait Fondseyuf (170) and Kamari Williams (195) with Austin Richardson (160) ending the tournament as a runner-up. Finishing the tournament in fourth place were Darryl Nichols (106) and Jake Hendrix (138) with Chris Dubois (145) coming in sixth.

Even though Leach lost a heart-wrenching battle for second place, Eastside’s Misha Felton did better winning his match at 126 to win his weight class. Landon Moore lost in the semifinal match of the championship round in the 152-pound weight class but turned it around in the consolation finals for third place. Winning his final bout of the 113-pound weight class was Rod Boley to take fifth place for the Eagles.
