Eastside sweeps Walnut Grove on the hardwood

COVINGTON — The Eastside girls had to come back from behind while the Eagles boys led all the way to give Eastside squads the swept Walnut Grove in the non-region match-up on Tuesday.

The Eagles (5-1) had a 10-point, 61-51, win while an over-powering second half by the Lady Eagles (6-1) pushed them over the Lady Warriors 57-49.

Boys

The Eastside boys were able to expand their five-point, first quarter (15-10) lead into a 10-point halftime lead (34-24) before the Warriors closed the gap to end the third quarter. Walnut Grove (3-4) outscored the Eagles 19-13 making it a 47-43 game heading into the fourth period.

But the Eagles were able to outscore Walnut Grove 16-8 giving them the double-digit win.

Treyvon Francis paced the Eagles with 21 points while bringing down five rebounds and getting six assists with Anthony Henderson adding 15 points with seven rebounds and seven steals. Daniel Oduah came close to getting a double-double scoring nine points and getting nine rebounds.

“Once again we did a pretty decent job defensively,” Eastside boys head coach Greg Freeman said. “There is going to be a game where we actually convert all of the easy layup and shots in the paint. We actually are allowing teams to hang around by not converting those shots when they present themselves.”

Girls

After Eastside took a four-point, 16-12, lead to end the first quarter, the Lady Warriors (3-4) shut down Eastside’s scoring to take a 29-24 halftime lead. The Lady Eagles came out strong to start the second half taking a 38-37 lead before expanding their lead to end the game for the eight-point win.

Three Eastside players finished the game in double-figure scoring with Zaria Barton leading all scorers with 21 points while getting eight rebounds. Ending the game with 10 points and seven rebounds was Raynesha Clay while Jymara Smith had a double-double with 11 points and 10 rebounds.

Pacing the Lady Warriors on offense were freshman Milana Woods and senior Brianna Faulk with 15 and 10 points.
