NEWBORN — Newborn mayor Roger Sheridan reportedly died Tuesday evening in the cardiac intensive care unit at Athens Regional Medical Center after suffering a massive heart attack.

Sheridan, who was serving his second term as mayor, was first elected in 2009 at the age of 88. He was then reelected for a second term in November after running unopposed for the position.

Sheridan was known for serving as mayor with a diplomatic approach. After being elected, he went from door to door talking to the residents of Newborn, asking them what they would like in their community. Along with the City Council, he discovered $119,000 in unspent SPLOST funds, which was used to renovate an old schoolhouse into a community gathering spot.

While serving as mayor, Sheridan also oversaw the paving of numerous roads in Newborn, including Country Creek Road, Timberlake Drive, Robertson Road, Nelson Street, Field Street, Hilltop Drive, Valley Street, and Davis Road. He was also able to get a Dollar General location in town and a public park next to Town Hall during his first term.
