COVINGTON — If you’re itching for a different, fun way to test your endurance, the FFA-FCCLA Center is hosting the first annual Udder Mud Run, an alternative to the traditional 5K that features a 20-obstacle course that will have participants neck deep in red Georgia clay.
Registration is currently underway for the Sept. 28 event, which takes place at the FFA-FCCLA Center off Ga. Hwy. 36 in Newton. Obstacles include a slip n’ slide, tunnels, mud pits and pipes. So far, more than 200 people have registered, said Education Program Specialist Leroy Bagley. Registration can be done online at uddermudrun.com.
Newton Citizen readers who enter the code newtoncitizen will receive $10 off, Bagley said.
There is one competitive 3-mile heat that begins at 10 a.m., with awards to the top three male and female contestants. The remaining three heats — at 10:30, 11 and 11:30 — are just for fun. Registration is $60 for the 3-mile heats, through Sept. 22, or $65 the date of the event.
There’s also a 1-mile family and friends run at noon, which is $30. Those running both courses can register for the 3-mile heat and contact the FFA-FCCLA Center for a discount code on the family run.
There is a minimum age of 13 for the 3-mile heats. There is no minimum age for the family and friends run, but all participants under 13 must be accompanied by an adult.
For those who don’t want to participate but are interested in watching, there will be spectator areas available.
The event is a fundraiser for the FFA-FCCLA Center.
Volunteers are also needed to man water stations, work obstacles and take pictures. Volunteers can participate in their own heat for free, Bagley said.
“It’s a different way to really get out and get acclimated or really get in shape,” Bagley said.
He added that, “You don’t have to be super athletic; you just have to have the will to do it.”
Participants should bring a full change of clothes, a towel and a trash bag and should wear clothes they don’t mind being ruined. Regular running shoes are recommended. The event will happen rain or shine.
