CONYERS — A multi-jurisdictional task force formed Thursday morning to apprehend an armed robbery suspect made quick work of the task.
As of Thursday evening, the task force had taken into custody a Covington man suspected in three recent commercial armed robberies.
The Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office, in conjunction with the Conyers Police Department, Rockdale E9-1-1, and other state and federal partners, created the task force to aggressively address the recent robberies in the Conyers-Rockdale County area. In all, more than 20 law enforcement officers participated in the search for the serial robber. In each of the robberies, the suspect rushed into the store with a covering over his face and displayed a handgun.
In their first meeting, which was held Thursday at 10 a.m. at the Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office, task force members shared intelligence information on the robberies, provided lookouts on the vehicle, and viewed videos and photographs taken from security cameras. Shortly after the task force convened today, Capt. Michael Ransom of the Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office spotted a vehicle matching the description of the suspect’s vehicle in a grocery store parking lot on Salem Road. He identified and detained the suspect, while other task force units rushed to assist.
Jonathan Isaiah Hall, 23, of 325 Wynfield Drive in Covington, faces charges on three counts of armed robbery and one count of being a fugitive from justice. Hall was arrested without incident and is being held in the Rockdale County Jail.
Task force members later served a search warrant at the suspect’s residence and recovered a handgun believed to have been used in the robberies.
“I want to commend Capt. Michael Ransom of our Field Services Bureau, as well as the other members of the task force, for their diligence and quick response,” said Sheriff Eric Levett. “In less than three hours from the initiation of the task force, ‘We got him!’ We are very fortunate in Conyers and Rockdale County to have diligent and dedicated law enforcement officers who put themselves in harm’s way every day to protect our citizens. We are very serious about addressing violent crime in this county and are going to go after every single violent offender with everything we have.”
The robbery task force is a collaborative effort between the Conyers Police Department; the Rockdale County Sheriff’s Office; Rockdale E9-1-1; the Georgia Bureau of Investigation; the Georgia Board of Pardons/Paroles; the Georgia State Patrol; and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms.
