Tiny Poco and blue-eyed Sammy are looking for new homes

This itsy-bitty doggie is named Poco. A Chihuahua, he’s between 1 and 2 years old and is having a hard time adjusting to the noisy shelter with all the strange animals and people around. He needs a quiet family with just adults or a family with older children. After all, he only weighs 8 pounds and it’s a big, bad world out there. He can be rescued and adopted at Newton County Animal Shelter, located at 210 Lower River Road in Covington. The shelter usually has between 20 to 30 dogs and an equal number of cats eligible for adoption. The adoption fee for a dog or puppy is $25 and $10 for a cat or kitten. Spaying/neutering is mandatory for all animals. The shelter is open from 11 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturdays. The phone number is 770-786-9514. Anyone who has lost a pet is urged to go to the center and bring a photo of the missing animal.

This unusually marked kitty is known as Sammy. He looks as though those blue eyes are peering at you from behind a mask. Only about 4 months old, he’ll weigh about 10 pounds as an adult. He has medium length hair and will doubtless be a handsome lad. He is very sweet and gets along well with other cats. He’s litter box trained and up-to-date on shots. He can be rescued and adopted at Rockdale County Animal Care and Control Shelter at 1506 Rockbridge Road in Conyers. At the Rockdale shelter adoption fees for dogs are $30 and $20 for cats. Spaying or neutering is required for adoption. The shelter is open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday. The phone number is 770-278-8403.

Questions to ask before adopting a pet:

• Can I make a long-term commitment to this pet?

• Will I be able to spend enough time with a new pet?

• Am I prepared for the cost a new pet will bring?

• Which pet is right for my home and my family?
