More than 70 people attended the Ellington Neighborhood Watch First Night Out recently.

Participants included Wendy Olds, Tijuana Smith and Sequita Aapcher, pictured at right.

The event was in concert with other Neighborhood Watch organizations throughout the country. Neighbors turned on porch lights and met at the Ellington clubhouse with representatives of the Newton County Sheriff’s Office.

They marched through the neighborhood in the rain with a colorful banner and sheriff’s office escort.

Later, they held a cookout at the clubhouse.

“Sheriff Brown helped to sponsor this event. With his team’s support, the Neighborhood Watch has significantly decreased crime in the neighborhood compared to last year,” resident Ann Neuhierl said.
