The Newton County Sheriff’s Office provides School Resource Officers to each high school and middle school in Newton County. The following is a list of reports filed by these officers that have been received by the Newton Citizen:
EASTSIDE HIGH SCHOOL
• A fight in a classroom erupted on Aug. 14 around 10 a.m. and a resource officer was called. It was determined that a 15-year-old student had attacked a 16-year-old student. The two students had minimal injuries and both were seen by the nurse and released. The 15-year-old was determined to be the primary aggressor and a juvenile complaint was filed against him.
• Around 8 a.m. on Aug. 15, two female students became involved in a physical altercation in the cafeteria. One was and the other was 16. A teacher intervened and attempted to break up the fight and was accidentaly struck in the face. The teacher did not want to press charges.The 16-year-old had a juvenile complaint filed against her and Alexus Shanta Tate, 17, of 10116 Broken Branch Court, was charged with fighting in a public place (affray).
INDIAN CREEK MIDDLE SCHOOL
• School personnel notified a school resource officer on Aug. 15 that they had information that a student had marijuana in a locker on campus. An administrative search of the locker resulted in the discovery of a small amount of suspected marijuana in a clear plastic bag. The NCSO deputy placed the student, and a second student who had allegedly provided the marijuana, in custody and filed juvenile complaints against them for possession of marijuana less than an ounce.
• A school resource officer was called by staff on Aug. 13 around 9 a.m. to the front door of Mainstay Academy regarding a student outside the school who was being disorderly. Later in the morning the student was charged with disorderly conduct and obstruction of a law enforcement officer.
