Piedmont Academy starts new school year with new students

MONTICELLO — Piedmont Academy recently started a new school year with a number of new students.

The 2013-14 school year opened earlier this month with the addition of 45 new students in various grade levels.

The total enrollment of the school is 297 students, which is the same as last school year.

The school is made up of 18 preschool students, 93 students in kindergarten through fifth grades, 76 middle school students and 110 high school students.

Twenty-five percent of this year’s student body has Piedmont alumni parents or grandparents. More than 850 alumni belong to the school’s association.

Drawing from a 10-county area — up from eight last year — Jasper County represents 46 percent of the student body, Newton County represents 23 percent and Butts County represents 25 percent, an increase of 2 percent from Butts County compared to the previous school year. Other counties represented include Rockdale, Baldwin, Putnam, Henry, Morgan, Jones and Walton.

The independent school was founded in 1970 and is entering its 44th year in education. The school is accredited with quality by the Georgia Accrediting Commission, has accreditation from Southern Association of Independent Schools and is AdvancEd certified. Piedmont is a member of the Georgia Independent School Association.
