Teachers can apply for Kids in Need Foundation grants

DAYTON, OHIO – Prekindergarten through 12th-grade teachers may be able to earn some extra money for classroom projects.

The Kids In Need Foundation, a national, non-profit organization dedicated to providing free school supplies to economically disadvantaged school children and under-funded teachers, has launched the 2013 teacher grants program, marking the 16th year the grants have been available. Teachers nationwide can visit the Kids In Need Foundation website at www.kinf.org to apply for grants ranging from $100 to $500 to conduct classroom projects. This year, for the first time, Pre-K teachers also can apply for funding through the program using the Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores application.

“Teacher grants allow educators to provide experiential learning opportunities in the classroom when there otherwise would not be the funds to do so,” said Dave Smith, executive director of Kids In Need. “We believe that through our partnerships with Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores, Office Depot and the Office Depot Foundation, Fred Meyer and Via Credit Union, teachers will be able to engage students in the learning process.”

He said that the teachers will be able to get tools to strengthen creativity, critical thinking skills, and core knowledge among their students.

Applications are available online at www.kinf.org. The deadline for submission of grant applications is Sept. 30. Grant awards are based on the creativity of the projects being proposed. Two of the teacher grants sponsors, Office Depot/Office Depot Foundation and Jo-Ann Fabric and Craft Stores, offer teacher loyalty programs that provide benefits to teachers. When applying for grants, teachers will be required to sign up for the program. Teachers who are already enrolled in the loyalty programs also may complete the applications.

Teachers enrolling in the Office Depot Rewards Star Teacher Program will receive up to 400 points for signing up and completing online member profiles. Additionally, members get points for shopping, connecting and recycling. For every 1,000 points earned, an Office Depot Rewards Certificate will be issued.

The Jo-Ann Teacher Rewards Program offers a free discount card for 15 percent off every purchase from Sept. 1 to Aug. 31, excluding remnants, patterns, gift cards and previous purchases. Teachers enrolling or re-enrolling in the program will receive a bonus coupon for 20 percent off any one total purchase.

The Kids In Need Foundation is a national 501(c)(3) charitable organization. Founded in 1995, the Foundation’s mission is to ensure that every child is prepared to learn and succeed by providing free school supplies nationally to students most in need.
