Newton Citizen Poll for Aug. 11, 2013

The Newton Citizen Poll is a compilation of opinions submitted by readers. They do not necessarily reflect the opinions of the Citizen newspapers. If you agree or disagree with something you read here, you may respond by emailing poll@newtoncitizen.com or call 770-483-7108, ext. 403. Please remember that the Citizen Poll is not a forum for comments either for or in opposition to candidates seeking elective office.

(Editor’s Note: A comment in the Newton Citizen Poll last week stated that Commission Chairman Keith Ellis and the Board of Commissioners voted to increase property taxes. Chairman Ellis did not vote on a millage increase; the BOC chairman does not vote except in the case of a tie.)

“Newton County Commission: Gun Control (Strike 1); Higher property taxes (Strike 2); Allowing yourself a pay raise (Strike 3); You’re out!”

“Overheard a conversation the other day between two young men. One said to his friend. ‘Yeah, I got that job at $9.80/hour, but I quit it after one day because they were asking me to do things I wasn’t hired to do and those tasks were just beneath me. So I’m looking for a job again.’ And I just shook my head and thought a stint in the U.S. military might be just what this fellow needs.”

“Charlie Rangel used ‘white crackers’ in a recent speech. We whites should demand the same treatment for him that Paula Dean received. Double standards anyone? I am sick of it! The Tea Party whites can have anything said about them with no repercussions, but heaven help a white who used the n-word, even 30 years ago. Where is the justice? Wake up white Southerners and Tea Party people, wake up and smell the roses. This is only the beginning, with this president and his administration. They are always calling out the race card unless it applies to them. They have passed being liberals and have moved to being radicals.”

“Fraud — deceit, trickery, or breach of confidence, by which it is sought to gain some unfair or dishonest advantage. All you people out there who are getting all these Obama freebies and don’t actually qualify, know who you are. I received my last home phone bill and it stated (in small print), that the Federal Universal Service Fee (supporting telecommunication needs of low-income households, consumers living in high-cost areas, schools, libraries and rural hospitals), had increased as well as the Federal Subscriber Line Charge. These increases would not be necessary if our government checked giving out all the free cell phones. On a television expose’ the other day, I saw where a woman in the low-income area of Chicago admitted that she had gotten 30 free cell phones, no questions asked. Another show depicted a reporter who had even told the people handing out the phones in Texas that she was actually not eligible, and they told her not to worry about it. She wound up with three free cell phones. These are just two pathetic instances of the unchecked fraud going on in this country. This also applies to food stamps, free rent, and the ridiculous EBT card. No wonder our debt is almost $17 trillion and rising. When is this insanity going to stop?”

“While you are busy taking cheap shots at our only county commissioner who is trying to hold the line on taxes and pay raises, it would benefit you to remember several things: You wouldn’t even know about the pay raise for county commissioners had Commissioner Douglas not told you. The pay raise could have been stopped by three commissioners voting against its implementation. Not one of the other commissioners spoke against the pay raise, rather three of the four piously said they would do this or that with the extra money. The fourth commissioner at least said he would keep the money. The chairman sat mute ... doing nothing to stop it, only once again saying he would not accept it but implying he would not work to stop it from happening just as he did nothing to stop the tax hike. So while Newton County employees suffer with low wages, no pay raises and furlough days, you publish a hit piece on the only voice in county government to show a sense of responsibility and concern for those employees. Way to go Newton Citizen.”

When will people stop following ministers of hate? Not once has anyone heard Sharpton or Jackson preach about LOVE! Instead they use their fellow citizens to push forward the HATE that makes them so much money! God created man; Man created the races.

What does the BOC chair do? Why is he getting paid $89,000 with a county manager taking most of duties? As a republican who is supposed to be against tax increases and for taxpayers why did he not take a leadership roll in trying to stop this pay increase for the BOC? Instead as the poster above say's you with this paper go after with your article the only commissioner to let the citizens know this pay increase was coming.

56 Vick, if Douglas is doing such a miserable job, why don't you run against him next election. I might vote for you if you can show me you would stand against gun control, tax hikes and midnight pay raises.........and the Conyers PD operating in Newton County. So how about it 56Vick? Why not do something productive rather than just complaining all the time. Get out there and let us have a look.

Gun Control????????????? The latest version of the "shooting ordinance" is less restrictive than the last one. Try to follow along here - - - less restrictive. For you people that seem to be slow "less restrictive" in this case means you can essentially shoot in more places than you could before. It was a positive step for us shooters.

Douglas is the ONLY commissioner to vote against the tax increase. If you want to call it a dog and pony show to be the only vote against a tax increase then what would you call the other 4 who voted to increase your tax and against all motions for fiscal responsibility of the Newton County Government? I call it Douglas caring about the struggling home and business taxpayers of Newton County.

So did anyone else pick up on this? The Newton BOE did not have a prayer this week for the first time ever by any elected member of the board in the same week that the Alcovy High School controversy broke on the "God is Dead" artwork. One of the elected BOE members has always said the prayer but not this week. So why?

A Godless thing I say if true. Why would they stop suddenly saying the prayers by the members one day after the Alcovy High artwork controversy. Why has no paper person dug in this and found out and told us why?
