Students can register for September ACT

COVINGTON — Student registration is now open for the Sept. 21 administration of the ACT, a college readiness exam.

Locally, it will be given at Georgia Perimeter College’s Newton Campus, off Ga. Highway 11, according to the ACT website. Other testing sites are available throughout the state.

The registration deadline for students who intend to take the exam on this date is Aug. 23.

Students may register for the ACT online at www.actstudent.org or by mail. Paper registration forms can be obtained from school counselor offices or by requesting a registration packet from ACT.

Students also must submit a photo of themselves to register for the ACT. The deadline for submitting a photo for the September test date is Sept. 13.

The ACT is a curriculum-based achievement exam. It measures the academic skills and knowledge that students have learned in school and need to know to be ready for first-year college courses.

The ACT is comprised four multiple-choice subject exams: English, mathematics, reading and science. It takes about three hours, plus breaks, to complete. An optional writing test, which takes an additional 30 minutes, is also available. Students who intend to take the writing portion should register for the ACT Plus Writing.

The cost to take the ACT with no writing test is $36.50. The cost to take the ACT Plus Writing is $52.50. Fee waivers are available to qualified students who can’t afford the registration fee. Students should apply for a fee waiver through their school counselor’s office.

All four-year colleges and universities across the United States accept the ACT scores for admission purposes. During registration, students may select up to four colleges or universities to receive their score reports at no additional charge. ACT sends score reports only when authorized to do so by the student.

Each test taker receives an ACT score report following the exam that includes a wide variety of information to assist with course planning, college readiness, career planning and college admissions.

The ACT student website, www.actstudent.org, offers helpful information and tips, free sample questions, complete practice tests and inexpensive materials to help students prepare for the exam.

Students also can take the ACT at various locations Oct. 26 and Dec. 14 this year or Feb. 8, April 12 and June 14 next year. Locally, testing site options for some of the future dates are Eastside High School and Georgia Perimeter College in Covington and Heritage and Rockdale County high schools in Conyers, with other testing sites available throughout Georgia.
