Armed robber strikes Newton County Marathon gas station Wednesday night

COVINGTON — The Marathon gas station at the intersection of Ga. Highway 11 and U.S. Highway 278 was robbed Wednesday night, according to the Newton County Sheriff’s Office.

NCSO Public Information Officer Deputy Cortney Morrison said the clerk and her boyfriend were at the store around 10:45 p.m., preparing to close when the armed robber entered the store.

“He jumped on the counter, brandishing a gun and told them to give all the money to him,” Morrison said. “They emptied the register and once he got the money, he jumped off the counter and ran.”

Morrison said the robber is described as a black male, approximately 5 feet, 10 inches tall, weighing about 160 pounds, wearing a long-sleeved black shirt, a black ski mask and gloves.

The clerk said he left on foot, but could provide no direction of travel. Morrison said a K-9 Unit from the Covington Police Department was called to the scene, but the track did not reveal any evidence.

There were no customers in the store at the time of the robbery.

Morrison asks that anyone with any information regarding this incident call the NCSO at 678-625-1400 or go to their website at www.newtonsheriffga.org and click on anonymous tips to leave information. All information will be treated confidentially.

Strange report from here - no one could indicate which way this robber went after taking all the cash - maybe all the out side & inside lights were turned off and the windows were fogged up on the inside from all this humidity we have had recently. Secondly, me thinks the canine from the K-9 unit must have a bad sniffer and needs to be retired from duty - the dog couldn't even pick up a sent trail from the store counter to the exit door - had a little female blue tick beagle like that once, she caught distemper & couldn't pick up a rabbit sent from 4" away - made a great house pet after that.
