COVINGTON — The city of Covington has hired a new finance director.
William Randall (Randy) Smith of Locust Grove will begin work Aug. 26, according to a press release issued by the city Tuesday. Smith is replacing Leigh Anne Knight, who was appointed city manager earlier this year.
“I just want to say that I am excited about this opportunity and that I’m really looking forward to working for the city of Covington and for Leigh Anne,” Smith said.
Smith is currently the accounting manager for Peachtree City. He holds a bachelor of business administration degree in accounting from the University of Georgia and is a certified public accountant. He has previous work experience in banking, finance and auditing, according to the press release.
“I think Mr. Smith is very well qualified for the position. His background shows evidence of dependability and an easy to get along with attitude. He will be a good team player and we look forward to having him as part of the city of Covington,” said Director of Human Resources Ronnie Cowan.
The position was advertised beginning in May and the application period closed on June 5. The city received a total of 15 applications, with seven candidates meeting the minimum job qualifications, according to Cowan. One withdrew prior to being interviewed. Of the six candidates interviewed, two had the desired government finance and accounting backgrounds, he said. The other top contender withdrew from consideration.
The salary range for the position is $66,706 — $98,675. Based on Smith’s education, experience and credentials, the city offered him a salary of $93,912, Cowan said.
