COVINGTON -- Both Alcovy tennis teams made it to the first round of the Class AAAAAA tournament with the boys taking second place and the girls winning fourth in the Region 2-AAAAAA tournament held Wednesday and Thursday at Richard Craig Park in McDonough.
The boys easily took care of Morrow with a 4-0 win before getting past Luella 3-2 to make it to the championship match against Rockdale, where they lost 4-0.
In the first match against Morrow, which secured a berth to the state tournament, John Gammans led the singles matches with a 6-0, 6-1 win with fellow singles players Clayton Anderson winning at No. 2 with a 6-0, 6-2 win and Hunter Aycox, at No. 3 singles, winning 6-1, 6-0.
The No. 2 doubles team of Jordan Hexom and Okon Godwin blanked its opponents 6-0, 6-0. At No. 1 doubles, Stefen Kirk and Holden Miller won their first set 6-2 and were leading the second set 3-0 before being pulled off the court.
In a marathon match that put Alcovy in the finals, Anderson showed endurance in the three- hour-long match. After losing the first set 7-6, Anderson came back to win the final two sets 6-2 and 7-5 to put Alcovy in the match against Rockdale.
Also winning their matches were the No. 2 doubles team of Hexom/Godwin (6-0, 6-1) and Gammans (6-0, 6-3).
The Alcovy boys will host East Coweta on Wednesday in the first round of the tournament with the girls heading to Westlake.
