COVINGTON -- A student in the Alcovy High School after school program is being held without bond in the Newton County Detention Center on child molestation charges involving an incident that occurred at the school.
John Edmond McCammon, 17, of 230 Glynshire Court, faces charges of child molestation and aggravated child molestation involving a 15-year-old girl.
According to Newton County Sheriff's Office Public Information Officer Deputy Cortney Morrison, the incident occurred on April 11, between 4:30 and 6 p.m., but was not reported until April 16. At that time two female witnesses, ages 14 and 16, told a teacher about the incident. She alerted school administrators, who, in turn, notified the school resource officer.
"The 17-year-old student inappropriately touched a female student and exposed himself as well," Morrison said. "They were in one of the classrooms watching a movie that the teacher had turned on with the lights off."
Morrison said the two students who reported the incident were in the process of getting their book bags when they saw what was taking place.
"The school resource officer conducted an investigation and she obtained probable cause to make an arrest," Morrison said.
Sherri Davis Viniard, director of public relations for Newton County School System, said the teacher was in the classroom at the time of the incident, but noted that the lights were off to facilitate the viewing of the video.
"This is most definitely inappropriate behavior and disciplinary action is pending (against the students involved)," she said.
